Stepper Motors

Stepper Motors are digitally controlled motors that are ideal for use when precise positioning is required. Stepper motors provide simple accurate control of both rotation angle and rotation speed, so they are perfect for a wide variety of applications.

Duct Tape Engineering is pleased to offer the standard PK series 2-phase stepping motor, which features balanced performance, enhanced by high torque, low vibration and low noise.

Stepper motors function differently from standard DC motors, which rotate when voltage is applied to their terminals. Stepper motors have multiple "toothed" electromagnets arranged around a central gear. The electromagnets are energized by a microcontroller.

To make the motor’s shaft turn, an electromagnet is given power, causing the gear's teeth to become magnetically attracted to the gear. When the gear's teeth are aligned to one electromagnet, they are slightly offset from the next electromagnet. So when the next electromagnet is turned on and the first is turned off, the gear rotates slightly to align with the next one. This process is then repeated. Each of these rotations is called a step, thus the name “Stepper Motor
